Hub and spigot dimensions — solvent-cemented DWV fittings (NTC 1341 / ASTM D2665 pattern)

The DWV fitting hub is tapered: the entrance diameter A is larger than the pipe OD and the bottom diameter B is smaller, so the spigot wedges into an interference zone where the solvent cement fuses both surfaces. C is the minimum socket depth (the usable insertion length) and E the minimum fitting wall thickness. Values published by two Colombian manufacturers certified to NTC 1341, concordant with each other; dimensions follow the ASTM D2665 pattern (the 3″ size follows ASTM D2949) measured per the NTC 3358 methodology.

Published tolerances for A and B: ±0.13 to ±0.38 mm in 1-1/2″–4″ and up to ±0.76 mm in 6″–10″, depending on size and manufacturer. ¹ For 3″ the published entrance diameter varies between manufacturers within that range; the bottom (82.42 mm) and socket depth (38.1 mm) coincide. ² The 8″ and 10″ values come from a single manufacturer's catalog and are confirmed on quotation. Wall thickness E is a minimum; manufacturers allow up to −10% locally from mold-core movement provided the average of two opposite wall readings meets the table value. Laying lengths (center-to-face) per figure vary with each manufacturer's mold and are confirmed on quotation.

The 3″ DWV size is not the 3″ pressure size. The 3″ DWV OD is 82.56 mm (3.250 in, ASTM D2949 pattern); 3″ pressure pipe measures 88.9 mm (3.500 in). A 3″ DWV fitting does not assemble with 3″ pressure pipe or vice versa. The remaining sizes, 1-1/2″ to 10″, share the IPS OD with the pressure line, but the cemented DWV hub carries no pressure class: it serves gravity flow only.

2. Hydraulics of the DWV fitting: the 45-degree rule

In gravity drainage a fitting is not selected by pressure but by flow-entry geometry. A drain carries water with solids at half section: if a branch enters a horizontal main at 90°, the stream strikes the opposite wall, loses velocity and solids settle at the impact point — that is where recurring blockages start. Plumbing codes therefore require every connection between horizontal lines to enter at 45° or less in the direction of flow, and reserve the sanitary tee for exactly one case: a horizontal branch arriving at a vertical stack, where gravity accelerates the discharge on its own.

The rule, in code text: the Uniform Plumbing Code states that horizontal drainage lines connecting with other horizontal drainage lines shall enter “through 45 degree wye branches, combination wye and one-eighth bend branches, or other approved fittings of equivalent sweep” (UPC, sec. 706.3, Horizontal to Horizontal; same requirement in 706.4 for vertical to horizontal). The sanitary tee appears among permitted fittings only in 706.2, Horizontal to Vertical. The International Plumbing Code fixes the same in its sec. 706.3 and Table 706.3 (changes of direction by fitting type). NTC 1500:2023 governs drainage changes of direction along the same lines.

Synthesis of UPC 2021, sec. 706.2–706.4, and IPC 2021, Table 706.3. The combination wye + 1/8 bend is assembled on site from the catalog's wye and 45° elbow. The project is governed by the applicable NTC 1500 edition.

Hub×hub vs hub×spigot elbow: where each one goes

The hub×hub (CxC) elbow has a hub on both ends: it receives pipe on both sides and is the standard routing elbow. The hub×spigot (CxE, street) elbow replaces one hub with a spigot machined to the pipe OD: that end enters directly into the hub of the next fitting, with no short pipe stub in between. It is used tight against another fitting — typically under P-traps, at a wye outlet or wherever the gap between fittings does not fit a pipe nipple: it removes one cemented joint and subtracts the socket depth (17.5 to 76.2 mm depending on size, table in section 1) from the assembly height.

The side-vented elbow: air to protect the trap seal

The side-vented (revent) elbow is a 90° hub×hub elbow with an additional lateral opening (in the catalog, reduced to 2″) that connects the drain branch to the revent network downstream of the trap. Its function is to admit air so the discharge does not siphon the trap — the vacuum that would empty the trap's water seal and let sewer gases through. The maximum allowable trap-to-vent distance by diameter and the vent network design live in the catalog's DWV pipe data sheet (Table 10.6.1 of NTC 1500): this sheet does not duplicate it.

Minimum slope, drainage capacity by diameter (Manning, n = 0.009) and the NTC 1500 velocity and tractive-force checks are PIPE data and live in the catalog's PVC DWV and rainwater pipe data sheet — the fitting does not change that hydraulics, it preserves it as long as the entry respects the 45-degree rule.

3. Gasketed bells: NTC 1748 sewer and mechanical-joint bell

The other two subfamilies in this sheet are not cemented: they seal with an elastomeric gasket (hydroseal) housed in the bell. The pipe or spigot is lubricated and inserted; the compressed rubber makes the seal and the joint remains demountable and able to absorb movement — which a rigid cemented joint does not offer.

Sewer fittings (NTC 1748:2006)

Wye, tee and coupling for buried gravity mains, metric series (the coupling, 110 to 355 mm; remaining sizes confirmed per figure on quotation). The system standard is NTC 1748:2006, Rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sewer pipe and fittings (PSM-type pipe, large-diameter pipe and fittings), with ASTM D3034 (PSM type) and ASTM F679 (large diameters) as antecedents. The bell carries the installed hydroseal: the gasket complies with NTC 2536:2009 / ASTM F477 (elastomeric seals for joining plastic pipe) and the flexible joint's tightness follows the concept of ASTM D3212 (joints for drain and sewer plastic pipes using flexible elastomeric seals). Bell and gasket dimensions by diameter are proprietary to each manufacturer and are confirmed on quotation.

Gasketed-bell mechanical-joint fittings (pressure / water mains)

Tee, coupling and reducer with MJ bell: the gasketed bell applied to pressure and water-main networks, joining pipe without cement — the coupling's typical case is joining or repairing runs where the pipe cannot be displaced axially. The joint principle corresponds to ASTM D3139 (joints for plastic pressure pipes using flexible elastomeric seals), with an NTC 2536 / ASTM F477 gasket. The system's pressure class is set by the pipe and the manufacturer's bell; it is confirmed per reference on quotation.

Cemented vs gasketed: which one applies

Sealing principleCemented: cold chemical welding of the interference taper (NTC 576) — monolithic, permanent joint · Gasketed: compression of an F477 rubber seal — flexible, demountable joint
Movement and settlementCemented: absorbs no movement; PVC thermal expansion (0.08 mm/m·°C) is handled by routing and clamps · Gasketed: accepts deflection and axial movement from trench settlement — which is why it dominates buried sewer networks
Where the catalog uses itCemented: the whole building DWV subfamily (1-1/2″–10″) · Gasketed: NTC 1748 metric sewer and pressure/water-main MJ bell
AssemblyCemented: primer + solvent cement, quarter turn, hold 30 s · Gasketed: clean bell and gasket + lubricant, aligned insertion to the mark

4. P-traps, cleanout adapters and test plug

P-trap: the water seal

The trap forms the hydraulic seal that keeps drain gases from returning to the room. The liquid seal of a fixture trap shall measure between 51 and 102 mm (2 to 4 in) deep (IPC, sec. 1002.4). The catalog offers it as 180° hub×hub (with and without cleanout plug) and 135° hub×spigot, in 1-1/2″ to 4″ depending on the reference. The seal is protected by venting: the maximum trap-to-vent distance by diameter is in the DWV pipe data sheet (Table 10.6.1 of NTC 1500), and the side-vented elbow of section 2 is the fitting that implements it when the branch exceeds that distance.

Cleanout adapter: the system's access point

The cleanout adapter installs a threaded opening with a removable plug that gives rod or auger access to the network without dismantling it. Code references for locating them: on horizontal runs, a cleanout at least every 30.5 m (100 ft) of developed length (IPC 708.3.1; same interval in UPC 707.4); an additional cleanout at aggregate changes of direction greater than 135° (UPC 707.4) or at each change greater than 45° (IPC 708.3.3); and a cleanout at the base of each stack (IPC 708.3.4). Working clearance in front of the cleanout opening: 457 mm (18 in) for sizes up to 6″ (IPC 708.8). The Colombian standard's cleanout requirements govern over these references in projects under NTC 1500.

Test plug: the hydrostatic test of the network

The test plug temporarily closes the network's openings for the tightness test before acceptance. The reference procedure: fill the section with water so that no point under test has less than a 3 m (10 ft) head of water above it, and hold for 15 minutes with no drop in level before inspection (IPC 312.2; the gravity sewer test uses the same values in IPC 312.6, and the UPC requires the same minimum 3 m head in its sec. 712.2). That 3 m head equals only 29 kPa (4.3 psi): Colombian manufacturers' manuals state that a properly made cemented joint shows no leakage at 345 kPa (50 psi) of internal pressure — the test does not stress the joint, it exposes assembly defects. Once the test is done, the plug is removed or cut off per the opening detail; it is not a permanent service plug.

5. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a wye and a sanitary tee?

The wye receives the branch at 45° in the direction of flow and the sanitary tee receives it at 90°: that is why codes allow the tee only where a horizontal branch enters a vertical stack, and require a wye (or combination wye + 1/8 bend) in every connection between horizontal lines and at the base of a stack (UPC 706.2–706.4; IPC 706.3, Table 706.3). Geometrically both are three-opening fittings; hydraulically they are not interchangeable.

Wye or sanitary tee: which one should I use?

Use a wye whenever both connecting lines are horizontal or where a stack discharges into a horizontal main; use a sanitary tee only to connect a horizontal branch to a vertical stack. When in doubt, the wye is valid in all three cases of the section 2 matrix — the tee in only one.

How big is the hub of a 4″ DWV fitting?

The 4″ hub has a minimum socket depth of 44.5 mm (1.75 in), an average entrance diameter of 114.81 mm (4.520 in) and a minimum bottom of 114.17 mm (4.495 in), receiving the pipe's 114.30 mm spigot on an interference taper — full 1-1/2″ to 10″ table in section 1. Assembly measurements of specific figures, such as the 4″ wye, are in the catalog's blog guide.

Are the hub×hub and hub×spigot elbows interchangeable?

No: the hub×hub (CxC) receives pipe on both ends and the hub×spigot (CxE, street) inserts its spigot directly into another fitting's hub, with no pipe in between. To join two consecutive fittings, the CxE is correct; if there is pipe between them, use the CxC. The CxE spigot measures the pipe OD (section 1), so it always finds a hub to enter.

At what pressure is a PVC drainage system tested?

With a water column, not with air or line pressure: at least a 3 m (10 ft) head of water over any point of the section under test, held for 15 minutes with no drop (IPC 312.2; UPC 712.2). That equals 29 kPa (4.3 psi). The catalog's test plug closes the openings during the test.

Can DWV fittings be used on a pressure line?

No: the cemented DWV subfamily has no assigned pressure class (NTC 1341 / NTC 1087) and serves gravity drainage and venting only. Besides, the 3″ DWV size (82.56 mm OD) does not even assemble with 3″ pressure pipe (88.9 mm). For pressure networks the catalog carries the NTC 1339 PVC pressure fitting family, with its own data sheet.

6. Application notes

Feasibility

The cemented DWV subfamily covers building drainage, venting and rainwater by gravity, with the 60 °C maximum water temperature set in the DWV pipe data sheet. For buried mains subject to settlement, the NTC 1748 gasketed sewer subfamily is the right one — the cemented joint absorbs no trench movement. For joining or repairing pressure lines without displacing pipe, the gasketed MJ bell. If the line runs under permanent pressure, this family does not apply: use the catalog's PVC pressure fittings (NTC 1339).

Installation

Cemented joint: cut square, deburr, clean pipe and hub with PVC primer, apply NTC 576 solvent cement (generous on the spigot over a length equal to the socket, sparing inside the hub), insert fully with a quarter turn and hold 30 seconds. Mark the insertion depth first using length C from the table — a half-inserted spigot leaves an internal step that traps solids. PVC expands 0.08 mm per meter per °C: support runs with a fixed clamp at changes of direction and a sliding clamp on long runs, every 2 m horizontal and every 3 m vertical per the manufacturers' manuals. Gasketed joint: clean bell and gasket, lubricate and insert aligned — never put cement on a gasket seal.

Design

The fitting preserves the hydraulics the pipe defines: minimum slope (2% up to 2″, 1% from 3″ up), capacity by diameter and the velocity and tractive-force checks live in the DWV pipe data sheet and are governed by NTC 1500. Two code rules solved with fittings from this sheet: diameter is never reduced in the direction of flow (which is why DWV bushings and reducers only enlarge downstream) and every change of direction follows the section 2 matrix. Formal sizing by drainage fixture units and the applicable NTC 1500 edition belong to the project's responsible designer.

7. Technical notice and limitation of liability

The hub dimensions, tolerances and installation rules in this sheet are nominal values published by Colombian manufacturers certified to NTC 1341, concordant across two sources and with the cited pattern standards (ASTM D2665, ASTM D2949, NTC 3358). They guide selection; they are not a certificate of conformity for any given lot. Cemented DWV fittings carry no pressure class: no value in this sheet authorizes pressure service.

The actual behavior of each lot varies with manufacturing — mold-core movement (manufacturers allow up to −10% local wall reduction), actual socket depth per mold, gasket quality — and the cemented joint's performance depends on workmanship (cleaning, fresh cement, quarter turn, cure time). Certifying a lot requires the manufacturer's documentation under NTC 1341 or NTC 1748; TECTUL arranges the manufacturer's certificate upon request.

References to foreign plumbing codes (UPC 706 and 707, IPC 312, 706, 708 and 1002) are cited as a verifiable technical source for the assembly rules; in Colombia the governing code is NTC 1500 in the edition applicable to the project, and the network design belongs to the responsible engineer.
