Unlike metallic pipe (Barlow's formula on the steel allowable stress), the working pressure of pressure-rated PVC derives from the hydrostatic design stress of the plastic compound. That is why pressure is identical for every diameter of the same SDR. All values used are stated below:
| HDS — hydrostatic design stress | HDS = 13.79 MPa (2,000 psi) for water at 23 °C. Obtained from the hydrostatic design basis HDB = 27.58 MPa (4,000 psi) of the PVC 1120 compound — determined by 100,000 h regression per ASTM D2837 and listed in PPI TR-4 — multiplied by the 0.5 design factor. That 0.5 factor equals a 2.0 safety factor built into the pressure rating (Uni-Bell UNI-TR-6-21). |
| SDR — standard dimension ratio | SDR = OD / minimum wall = 32.5 (dimensionless). Preferred-number series of ASTM D2241/NTC 382; being a geometric ratio, the result does not depend on diameter. |
PVC properties are established at 23 °C (73.4 °F). Above that sustained service temperature the working pressure is multiplied by the table factor (interpolate for intermediate temperatures):
| Sustained temperature | Factor | Resulting PR, SDR 32.5 | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| °C | °F | bar | psi | |
| ≤23 °C | 73 °F | 1.00 | 8.6 | 125 |
| 27 °C | 80 °F | 0.88 | 7.6 | 110 |
| 32 °C | 90 °F | 0.75 | 6.4 | 93 |
| 38 °C | 100 °F | 0.62 | 5.3 | 77 |
| 43 °C | 110 °F | 0.50 | 4.3 | 62 |
| 49 °C | 120 °F | 0.40 | 3.4 | 50 |
| 54 °C | 130 °F | 0.30 | 2.5 | 37 |
| 60 °C | 140 °F | 0.22 | 1.9 | 27 |
At a sustained 38 °C the pipe has already lost 38% of its capacity, and at 60 °C it keeps only 22%. Pressure-rated PVC is not the right material for hot-water lines: evaluate PP-R or CPVC (separate catalog items). The project design temperature governs.
When a valve closes or a pump stops, the velocity change ΔV generates a pressure wave that travels along the line at celerity "a". The instantaneous surge is given by the Joukowsky equation:
Celerity depends on wall stiffness: the lower the material's elastic modulus and the higher the DR, the slower the wave and the lower the surge. Practical form of the celerity equation for pipe (water at ≈22 °C):
| K — bulk modulus of water | K = 2,068 MPa (300,000 psi); the 4,660 ft/s constant (≈1,420 m/s) is the speed of sound in water. |
| E — elastic modulus of the material | PVC cell 12454: E = 2,758 MPa (400,000 psi, ASTM D1784 minimum). Carbon steel: E = 200,000 MPa (29×10⁶ psi). The K/E ratio is what separates PVC from steel. |
| ρ — fluid density | Water: ρ = 1,000 kg/m³. |
| ΔV — velocity change | That of the analyzed event (valve closure, pump stop). The instantaneous case is the worst-case scenario. |
| Series | PR at 23 °C | Surge per ΔV = 1 ft/s (0.30 m/s) | Derived celerity "a" | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| bar | psi | bar | psi | ||
| DR 41 | 6.9 | 100 | 0.79 | 11.4 | ≈258 m/s · 846 ft/s |
| DR 32.5 (this sheet) | 8.6 | 125 | 0.88 | 12.8 | ≈290 m/s · 950 ft/s |
| DR 26 | 11.0 | 160 | 0.99 | 14.4 | ≈326 m/s · 1,069 ft/s |
| DR 21 | 13.8 | 200 | 1.10 | 16.0 | ≈362 m/s · 1,188 ft/s |
| SCH 40 steel (2″, calculated comparison) | — | 4.0 | 58 | ≈1,319 m/s · 4,328 ft/s | |
Surge values by DR published in Uni-Bell UNI-TR-6-21, Table 1 (Joukowsky); celerity is derived from them via a = ΔP/(ρ·ΔV). Steel row: calculated with the same celerity equation using E = 200,000 MPa and D/t = 60.3/3.91 = 15.4 (SCH 40, ASME B36.10-2022) — matches the formula within 1%. Engineering takeaway: for the same event, SDR 32.5 PVC sees a surge ≈4.6 times lower than steel.
Internal-pressure design checks for PVC (Uni-Bell UNI-TR-6-21): (1) maximum WP ≤ PR × thermal factor; (2) WP + recurring surge ≤ PR × thermal factor; (3) WP + occasional surge ≤ 1.6 × PR × thermal factor; (4) on lines with frequent pump cycles, cyclic life ≥ design life (Folkman equation: N = 10^(−4.196·log σ + 17.76), with σ = stress amplitude in psi). Slow valve closure, variable-speed drives and air valves reduce ΔV and with it the surge.
The mechanical joint is a push-on bell-and-spigot joint: the bell carries an elastomeric gasket seated in a factory groove and the beveled spigot is inserted up to the marked insertion line. Sealing comes from gasket compression, not from an adhesive. Standards: the joint per NTC 2295:2008 and ASTM D3139-19(2025); the gasket per NTC 2536:2009 and ASTM F477-14(2021).
Manufacturer installation guides per AWWA C605-21 limit axial joint deflection to ≤1°; larger direction changes are made with fittings. The gasketed joint is not self-restrained: hydraulic thrust at elbows, tees, reducers, caps and valves must be taken by concrete thrust blocks or restrained joints (tested per ASTM F1674).
Because the gasketed joint absorbs thermal expansion and small ground movements at every bell, allows repair by segments (a pipe can be pulled and replaced without cutting adhesive bonds), goes into service without waiting for solvent-cement cure times (NTC 576:2021) and better tolerates the pressure transients typical of pumped networks. Solvent-cemented joints remain the choice for smaller diameters and building work — in this catalog, solvent-weld PVC pressure pipe is a separate data sheet.
SDR 32.5 (125 psi at 23 °C) is the water-distribution series: enough pressure for municipal networks at the lowest wall cost. If operating pressure plus recurring surge exceeds 8.6 bar, step down the series: SDR 26 → 11.0 bar (160 psi) or SDR 21 → 13.8 bar (200 psi), with the same formula as section 2. For building work with solvent-cemented joints, the catalog reference is the solvent-weld PVC pressure pipe (separate sheet).
The joint decides the life of the network: clean gasket in its groove, system lubricant (NSF-certified for potable), insertion until the line is flush with the bell and never beyond. Deflection ≤1° per joint; thrust restraint at every direction change or dead end. External-load performance depends on haunch compaction (AWWA C605-21) as much as on the pipe itself.
The 125 psi rating already includes a 2.0 safety factor over the compound HDB, but it is a rating at 23 °C and sustained pressure: verify the four checks of section 3 (operation, recurring surge, occasional surge ≤ 1.6 × PR and cyclic life on pumped networks) and apply the temperature derating of section 2. Water hammer governs pumped networks: control ΔV with slow closures, variable-speed drives and air valves at high points.
The allowable pressure, hydraulic performance and temperature values in this data sheet are obtained by theoretical calculation from the nominal properties of the compound per its product standard and the design factors established therein. They are technical reference approximations, not a certificate of conformity for the lot.
Actual values may vary due to extrusion process conditions —wall thickness variation, residual stresses, blend quality— and raw material factors —resin outside its cell classification, regrind content, additive package—. They may also be affected by in-service events not foreseeable at design: recurrent water hammer, prolonged UV exposure, contact with incompatible fluids, sustained temperature above design and pressure-cycle fatigue, which can cause failure before the estimated service life.
Certifying the performance of a specific lot requires testing representative samples per the product standard (sustained pressure, quick burst, dimensional and compound control); only with those results is a certificate of conformity issued. Absent such tests, the data provided here must not be used as the sole criterion in critical applications or where the integrity of the line may compromise life or property; in such cases consult our technical team beforehand.
