PE80 polyethylene gas pipe — RDE 11

Yellow high-density polyethylene (PE80) pipe, class B, with antioxidant and UV stabilization, for domestic and commercial gas transport. Covers 1/2″ to 12″, in 50, 100, 150 and 200 meter rolls. RDE 11 construction at most diameters (RDE 7 for the thicker-wall 1/2″ variant), suitable for natural gas distribution networks with pressures up to 7 bar (101.5 psi) or LPG up to 1 bar (14.5 psi). It is a semi-rigid flexible pipe, not an elastic rubber hose.

2. What RDE is and why 1/2″ has two versions

RDE (Standard Dimension Ratio, equivalent to the international SDR) is the ratio between outer diameter and wall thickness: a lower RDE means a proportionally thicker wall for the same diameter, and therefore a higher allowable pressure for the same material. That is why 1/2″ has two constructions in the table: RDE 7 (2.27 mm wall, thicker) for the higher-pressure-demand service at that diameter, and RDE 11 (1.93 mm wall) as the standard construction for the rest of the range. All other diameters, 3/4″ to 12″, are made only in RDE 11.

Natural gas vs. LPG

The 7 bar limit is for natural gas (less dense, requiring higher-pressure distribution networks); the 1 bar limit is for LPG (liquefied petroleum gas, typically distributed at low pressure in residential networks). They are not interchangeable without checking the network's actual pressure: installing this pipe on a low-pressure LPG network is conservative, but using it on natural gas above 7 bar is not covered by this sheet.

3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does RDE 11 mean versus RDE 7?

It is the outer-diameter-to-wall-thickness ratio: RDE 7 has a thicker wall (higher allowable pressure) than RDE 11 at the same nominal diameter. Only 1/2″ is available in both constructions.

Is it suitable for natural gas above 7 bar?

Not covered by this sheet; consult the manufacturer for a lower-RDE (thicker-wall) construction for higher pressures.

Is it the same pipe as "Tubo PE al PE amarillo para gas"?

Yes, it is the same construction and material; that page is a commercial alias of this sheet.

4. Application notes

Feasibility

Confirm the network's actual pressure (natural gas or LPG) against the declared limits (7 bar / 1 bar) before specifying.

Installation

Use certified heat fusion or electrofusion for joints; do not use adhesives or threads on PE gas pipe.

Design

For natural gas pressures above 7 bar, consult the manufacturer for a lower-RDE construction.

5. Technical notice and limitation of liability

The pressures, dimensions, weights and other characteristics in this sheet are theoretical calculation values obtained from nominal properties published in the standards cited (ASME B36.10-2022, ASME B31.3-2024, ASTM A106/A106M-19a, ASTM A53/A53M-24, API Spec 5L 46th ed.). They guide selection; they are not a certificate of conformity for any given lot.

The actual behavior of each lot varies with manufacturing — wall tolerance (up to −12.5%), out-of-roundness, residual stresses — and with the raw material — chemical composition within the ranges the standard allows, heat-to-heat differences. To certify a lot, the tests defined by its product standard are required: tensile test, flattening test and hydrostatic test, documented in the manufacturer's mill test certificate (MTC), which TECTUL supplies upon request; testing of the lot in an independent laboratory can also be arranged.

These values must not be used as the sole criterion in critical or safety applications, or wherever failure of the line may compromise people, property or the environment: in such cases the design belongs to the project's responsible engineer under the applicable code (ASME B31.3, B31.1 or the one governing the installation), with the design temperature, corrosion allowance and load cases of the actual service.
