The ultrasonic water meter measures flow through acoustic signals, normally by transit-time difference, without a turbine or moving parts in contact with the flow. This feature distinguishes it from mechanical single-jet, multi-jet or Woltmann meters, which depend on a wheel or turbine. The ultrasonic meter does not use a turbine or moving parts; the Woltmann is a mechanical velocity meter for bulk metering in higher-flow networks.
It must be installed respecting flow direction, permitted orientation, electrical protection if applicable and hydraulic conditions that avoid air in the sensor.
