2. Engineering calculations: pressure drop when branching

Worked example: localized head loss at the branch
  1. Starting figure: a branch-flow tee typically introduces a loss coefficient K≈1.0–1.5 at the side outlet, versus K≈0.2–0.3 through the straight run (reference values from piping hydraulics handbooks such as Crane TP-410, for standard threaded tees).
  2. Practical reading: if the main flow splits through the side branch, the head loss on that path can be 4–5 times greater than if the flow continues through the tee's straight run.
  3. Design consequence: on lines where pressure drop is critical (instrumentation compressed air, long runs), prefer branching through the straight run rather than the side branch when the design allows it.

The cited K coefficients are reference values from hydraulics literature, not from this fitting's manufacturer; calculating the actual head loss of a specific system requires flow rate, fluid viscosity and the exact internal diameter of the installed part.

3. Frequently asked questions

Does the B101 tee reduce diameter at the branch?

No, per the available manufacturer sheet the straight run and the branch share the same NPT thread (no reduction); if you need a smaller-diameter branch, use a reducing bushing at that port or check whether a reducing tee reference exists.

Is it suitable for potable water?

Bronze is a traditional potable-water material, but the available manufacturer sheet does not declare a specific NSF/ANSI 61 certification; if the application requires it, confirm with the supplier before specifying.

Why does the 1/8″ size not show A and B?

The manufacturer's source table does not print those two values legibly for that size; it only confirms the weight (32 g). Exact values are confirmed on quotation.

4. Application notes

Feasibility

Suitable for branching water, compressed air and low-pressure oil lines without a diameter change. Do not specify for certified potable water without first confirming NSF/ANSI 61 or equivalent conformance with the supplier.

Installation

Seal all three threads with PTFE tape or a fluid-compatible sealant. Always hold the tee's hex/cylindrical body when tightening each end, never the adjacent pipe. Install with the branch oriented per the piping drawing to minimize additional elbows.

Design

Use 200 psi (13.8 bar) only cold (≤66 °C); for steam, 125 psi. For lines with critical pressure drop, account for the branch's higher loss coefficient versus the straight run when sizing the system. Confirm exact dimensions of the 1/8″ and the 3/8″/1/2″ sizes before detailing tight installation drawings.

5. Technical notice and limitation of liability

The pressures, dimensions, weights and other characteristics in this sheet are theoretical calculation values obtained from nominal properties published in the standards cited (ASME B36.10-2022, ASME B31.3-2024, ASTM A106/A106M-19a, ASTM A53/A53M-24, API Spec 5L 46th ed.). They guide selection; they are not a certificate of conformity for any given lot.

The actual behavior of each lot varies with manufacturing — wall tolerance (up to −12.5%), out-of-roundness, residual stresses — and with the raw material — chemical composition within the ranges the standard allows, heat-to-heat differences. To certify a lot, the tests defined by its product standard are required: tensile test, flattening test and hydrostatic test, documented in the manufacturer's mill test certificate (MTC), which TECTUL supplies upon request; testing of the lot in an independent laboratory can also be arranged.

These values must not be used as the sole criterion in critical or safety applications, or wherever failure of the line may compromise people, property or the environment: in such cases the design belongs to the project's responsible engineer under the applicable code (ASME B31.3, B31.1 or the one governing the installation), with the design temperature, corrosion allowance and load cases of the actual service.
