Bronze hose barbs — male NPT (B3) and female NPT fixed or with swivel nut (B2)

Brass bronze fittings with one barbed end (for insertion into flexible hose, secured with a clamp) and the other NPT-threaded. The B3 reference has male thread; the B2 has female thread, fixed or with a rotating swivel nut (lets the hose rotate without unthreading the already-tightened connection). The manufacturer catalog for the B3 covers 13 NPT thread (1/8″–3/8″) by barb diameter (1/8″–1/2″) combinations; for the B2 there is verified data at 1/4″ and 1/2″.

2. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the fixed B2 and the swivel-nut B2?

Both have female NPT thread and a hose barb; the difference is that in the swivel-nut version the hose (with its barb) can rotate freely on its axis without having to unthread the already-tightened NPT connection, useful when the hose must be oriented after the fitting is fixed in place.

How do I pick the right combination from the B3 table?

The first value is the NPT thread (the end that screws into pipe or a fitting) and the second is the hose diameter the barb accepts. Verify your hose's actual inner diameter matches the hose column before buying.

Does the barb seal on its own without a clamp?

No. The barb mechanically retains the hose but does not seal under pressure without a properly tightened clamp over the barbed section.

3. Application notes

Feasibility

Suitable for connecting flexible water, air or low-pressure oil hose to NPT-threaded pipe or fittings. Actual working pressure is limited by the installed hose and clamp, not by the bronze body.

Installation

Seal the threaded end with PTFE tape or a compatible sealant before threading. Insert the hose fully onto the barb and secure with a clamp sized to the hose's actual outer diameter. On the swivel-nut version, tighten the nut until it seats without forcing the thread.

Design

Verify the exact NPT x hose combination against the table in section 1 before purchasing; do not assume proportionality between NPT diameter and hose diameter, since the catalog mixes both dimensions independently.

The pressures, dimensions, weights and other characteristics in this sheet are theoretical calculation values obtained from nominal properties published in the standards cited (ASME B36.10-2022, ASME B31.3-2024, ASTM A106/A106M-19a, ASTM A53/A53M-24, API Spec 5L 46th ed.). They guide selection; they are not a certificate of conformity for any given lot.

The actual behavior of each lot varies with manufacturing — wall tolerance (up to −12.5%), out-of-roundness, residual stresses — and with the raw material — chemical composition within the ranges the standard allows, heat-to-heat differences. To certify a lot, the tests defined by its product standard are required: tensile test, flattening test and hydrostatic test, documented in the manufacturer's mill test certificate (MTC), which TECTUL supplies upon request; testing of the lot in an independent laboratory can also be arranged.

These values must not be used as the sole criterion in critical or safety applications, or wherever failure of the line may compromise people, property or the environment: in such cases the design belongs to the project's responsible engineer under the applicable code (ASME B31.3, B31.1 or the one governing the installation), with the design temperature, corrosion allowance and load cases of the actual service.
