Thin-wall schedule 10 carbon steel pipe for low-pressure lines: drains, vents, condensate returns, service air and water. Dimensions per ASME B36.10-2022, 14 diameters NPS 1/2″–12″; usual supply is welded (ERW) under ASTM A53 Gr B. Not suitable for threaded joints.

¹ Allowable pressure calculated with Barlow's formula (see calculations) using S = 137.9 MPa, joint factor E = 0.85 — ERW welded pipe, the usual schedule 10 supply — and −12.5% wall manufacturing tolerance. If the lot is seamless (E = 1.00), allowable pressure is 17.6% higher. Reference material: ASTM A53/A53M-24 Gr B; dimensions and weights per ASME B36.10-2022.
Joining: schedule 10 wall does not allow NPT threading: ASME B31.3-2024, Table 314.2.1, requires minimum schedule 80 for NPS ≤ 1-1/2″ and schedule 40 for 2″–6″ on threaded joints. This pipe is joined by butt welding, grooved couplings or welded flanges.

Allowable pressure per Barlow's formula of ASME B31.3-2024 (para. 304.1.2), with effective wall after manufacturing tolerance:

When schedule 10: its wall (35–45% of sch 40 in most diameters) cuts weight and cost on low design-pressure lines — industrial drains, vents, gravity condensate returns, service water and low-pressure air — joined by welding or grooved couplings. Made to order per project, 6 m lengths, 14 diameters NPS 1/2″–12″. Usual lot is ERW A53 Gr B; seamless available per project (improves allowable pressure by 17.6%).
Butt-weld joints (bevel per the welding procedure), grooved or flanged. Do not thread: the wall is below the ASME B31.3 Table 314.2.1 minimum. Support at closer spacing than sch 40 due to lower wall stiffness.
Published calculation uses E = 0.85 (ERW) and −12.5% tolerance. In corrosive service, the corrosion allowance quickly consumes a thin wall: consider sch 40 if the required allowance is ≥ 1 mm.
The pressures, dimensions, weights and other characteristics in this sheet are theoretical calculation values obtained from nominal properties published in the standards cited (ASME B36.10-2022, ASME B31.3-2024, ASTM A106/A106M-19a, ASTM A53/A53M-24, API Spec 5L 46th ed.). They guide selection; they are not a certificate of conformity for any given lot.
The actual behavior of each lot varies with manufacturing — wall tolerance (up to −12.5%), out-of-roundness, residual stresses — and with the raw material — chemical composition within the ranges the standard allows, heat-to-heat differences. To certify a lot, the tests defined by its product standard are required: tensile test, flattening test and hydrostatic test, documented in the manufacturer's mill test certificate (MTC), which TECTUL supplies upon request; testing of the lot in an independent laboratory can also be arranged.
These values must not be used as the sole criterion in critical or safety applications, or wherever failure of the line may compromise people, property or the environment: in such cases the design belongs to the project's responsible engineer under the applicable code (ASME B31.3, B31.1 or the one governing the installation), with the design temperature, corrosion allowance and load cases of the actual service.
