The Grade 2 Black UNF Hex Nut is an industrial nut for automotive maintenance, machinery and replacement of low-demand imperial fasteners. It is made from black carbon steel and works with UNF thread; where applicable, the reference is related to SAE J995 grade 2. Its main difference is fine UNF pitch for inch assemblies where greater thread adjustment is required than with UNC. To buy without errors, the critical data is not only the diameter: the pitch, thread series and grade or material of the bolt, stud or threaded rod must also match. UNF uses fine pitch and UNC uses coarse pitch. Selection depends on the bolt thread, not the outside wrench size.
Clean the thread, confirm diameter and pitch, start threading by hand and tighten with the proper tool according to the torque defined for the assembly.
Take the nominal diameter and pitch of the male thread. In inch threads, distinguish UNC from UNF; in metric, confirm the pitch indicated in millimeters.
It depends on the material and coating. Stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized finishes better resist exposure; zinc plated, black or black oxide finishes are recommended for protected environments.
