A thermowell is the metal pocket threaded into the pipe or tank that houses the thermometer or temperature sensor: the instrument is isolated from the fluid, can be removed without depressurizing or draining the line, and the well is what withstands the process pressure, velocity and corrosion. ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 (Thermowells) is the thermowell design standard: it defines the stress and frequency checks against fluid velocity to prevent failure by vortex-induced vibration.
The instrument housed in the well is the bimetal dial thermometer from this same family.
It is a closed metal pocket threaded into the pipe or tank to house the thermometer or probe: the sensor never touches the fluid and can be replaced without stopping or depressurizing the process. It also protects the element against fluid velocity and corrosion.
This series offers lengths of 2.5" (63.5 mm), 4" (101.6 mm) and 6" (152.4 mm), with 1/2" threads to the process and to the instrument; other lengths and connections are quoted per requirement.
By mounting they are threaded (like this series), flanged and weld-in; by shape, straight, tapered and stepped. The threaded 1/2" type is the instrumentation standard on small and medium diameter process lines.
It is the thermometer-plus-pocket assembly: the bimetal thermometer threads into the thermowell and the well threads into the line, so the fluid temperature is measured without exposing the instrument.

The dimensions, thicknesses, pressures, temperatures and other characteristics stated in this data sheet are theoretical nominal reference values, compiled from publicly available technical sources: international standards (ASME, ASTM, API, MSS, ISO and NTC, depending on the product) and published engineering literature.
