Stainless steel tubing is precision tube designated by exact outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness — not by NPS nominal size with schedule — connected with twin-ferrule compression fittings. It is supplied per ASTM A269/A269M-25 in grades 316/316L (TP304 depending on lot), seamless, annealed, with 90 HRB maximum hardness, in 6 m lengths and 1/8" to 1" OD.
| Characteristic | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product standard | ASTM A269/A269M-25 (seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service) |
| Grades | TP316 / TP316L with usual dual certification; TP304 depending on lot |
| Condition | Seamless, solution annealed (joint factor E = 1.00) |
| Maximum hardness | 90 HRB (192 HBW / 200 HV) per ASTM A269/A269M-25, Table 2 — suitable for twin-ferrule fittings |
| OD range | 1/8" (3.18 mm) to 1" (25.40 mm), fractional |
| Wall thicknesses | 0.028" (0.71 mm) to 0.120" (3.05 mm) |
| Tolerances | OD ±0.005" (±0.13 mm); wall ±15 % (OD < 1/2") or ±10 % (OD ≥ 1/2") — ASTM A269/A269M-25, Table 4 |
| Presentation | 6 m lengths, made to order |

Values calculated with equation (3a) of paragraph 304.1.2 of ASME B31.3-2024 (S = 137.9 MPa, Table A-1, seamless tube); the full OD × wall matrix is in TECTUL engineering data sheet FT-VT-TUB-TBG-001.
| OD × wall | Allowable pressure |
|---|---|
| 1/4" × 0.035" | 5,100 psi (351 bar) |
| 3/8" × 0.049" | 4,800 psi (330 bar) |
| 1/2" × 0.049" | 3,700 psi (255 bar) |
| 1" × 0.065" | 2,400 psi (165 bar) |

Tubing is not pipe: 1/2" tubing measures exactly 12.70 mm OD, while NPS 1/2 pipe measures 21.34 mm OD per ASME B36.10M-2022. That is why a 1/2" compression fitting never fits 1/2" pipe. It is not sanitary tube either: its priority is fitting compatibility, not hygienic finish. ASTM A269 governs general service; ASTM A213/A213M-24 governs boiler and heat-exchanger tubes, and the same tube may carry dual certification.

It depends on OD, wall thickness, grade (304/316/316L), quantity of lengths, and availability. TECTUL quotes with the complete specification; made-to-order product in 6 m lengths.
It depends on the OD × wall combination: for example 3,700 psi (255 bar) at 1/2" × 0.049" and 5,100 psi (351 bar) at 1/4" × 0.035" at ≤38 °C, calculated per ASME B31.3-2024 for seamless A269 tube. Allowable pressure decreases at higher temperature.
ASTM A269/A269M-25 is the general-service tubing standard covering this product; ASTM A213/A213M-24 governs boiler and heat-exchanger tubes. The same tube may carry dual certification — the lot certification is confirmed when quoting.
No. SCH40 pipe is designated by NPS and schedule (NPS 1/2 measures 21.34 mm OD per ASME B36.10M-2022); tubing is designated by exact OD (1/2" = 12.70 mm), and the fittings are not interchangeable.
Because the twin-ferrule fitting requires the tube to be softer than the ferrule so it can bite and seal: 90 HRB (200 HV) is the maximum guaranteed by ASTM A269/A269M-25 for annealed tubing.
Yes, the lot presentation is 6 m lengths, made to order; available ODs, walls, and grades are confirmed when quoting.

The dimensions, thicknesses, pressures, temperatures and other characteristics stated in this data sheet are theoretical nominal reference values, compiled from publicly available technical sources: international standards (ASME, ASTM, API, MSS, ISO and NTC, depending on the product) and published engineering literature. They are average approximations intended to guide selection, not a certificate of conformity for any given lot.
Actual values may vary due to conditions inherent to the manufacturing process — dimensional and wall-thickness tolerances (in pipe, typically ±12.5%), surface finish and residual stresses from forming or welding — and to factors inherent to the raw material — chemical composition variations within the ranges allowed by the standard, inclusions or heat-to-heat differences. They may also be affected by in-service events not foreseeable at design time: water hammer, vibration, thermal and mechanical fatigue, corrosion and operating overpressures, which can cause the element to fail before its estimated service life.
To know the certified behavior of a specific lot, TECTUL supplies upon request the manufacturer's mill test certificate (MTC) issued per the product standard; for critical applications, laboratory testing of the lot can also be arranged. In the absence of such certification, the data provided here must not be used as the sole criterion in critical or safety applications, or wherever the integrity of the line may compromise the lives of people or property; in such cases, consult our technical team first.
