03Technical description

Supply note: in 18", 20" and 24" diameters the pipe is not supplied in schedule 40 but in standard weight (SCH STD); quoted per project with that wall.

Seamless Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe is the workhorse of industrial conveying: water, compressed air, steam, oils and gases in plants, assemblies and utility networks. It is manufactured under ASTM A106 Gr. B (high-temperature service), ASTM A53 Gr. B and API 5L, in 6-meter lengths with beveled or plain ends, ready for butt welding or threading depending on diameter.

Which schedule do I need? SCH 10 vs SCH 40 vs SCH 80

ScheduleThickness (e.g. 2")Typical use
SCH 102,77 mmLow pressure, light process lines
SCH 40 (this page)3,91 mmGeneral conveying: water, air, steam and hydrocarbons at moderate pressures and temperatures
SCH 805,54 mmHigh pressure, critical lines, greater corrosion allowance

Important note on working pressure: the allowable line pressure is not a single number for the pipe — it depends on diameter, actual thickness, material, service temperature, corrosion allowance and design code (ASME B31.1/B31.3). Send us your line conditions via WhatsApp and our technical team will help validate the schedule.

Installation recommendations

We dispatch 6 m lengths to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Bucaramanga, Pereira and all of Colombia. Request a quote via WhatsApp indicating diameter, number of lengths and delivery city.

04Calculator: which schedule do I need?

Pick your diameter and service conditions: the calculator estimates the indicative allowable pressure of each schedule so you can compare.

Estimate using Barlow's formula (12.5% manufacturing tolerance, approximate allowable stress for ASTM A106 Gr. B per ASME B31.3). It is a comparison guide — it does not replace engineering calculations or your project's design code. Before deciding with these values, read the Technical notice and limitation of liability at the end of this page.

05Frequently asked questions

What is the price of Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe?

The price is per 6 m length and varies by diameter — in the table above on this page you see the price by size. Dispatch is quoted by city and volume; request your formal quote via WhatsApp.

What does Schedule 40 (SCH 40) mean?

It is the wall thickness designation of ASME B36.10 for each nominal diameter: an intermediate thickness suitable for general conveying at moderate pressures and temperatures. Cédula 40, ced 40, SCH 40 and schedule 40 are the same.

What is the difference between SCH 40 and SCH 80?

For the same diameter, SCH 80 has a thicker wall (in 2": 5,54 mm vs 3,91 mm), meaning higher allowable pressure and more corrosion margin, with higher weight and cost. If your line calculation allows it, SCH 40 is the most efficient option.

Is it suitable for steam?

It may be used in steam lines if the material (ASTM A106 Gr. B is indicated for high temperature), thickness, pressure and your project design code validate it. Do not define it only by schedule: confirm conditions with our technical team.

How is this pipe joined?

The usual method is butt welding with beveled ends (ASME B16.25) against SCH 40 fittings of the same diameter, under the project welding procedure (WPS). It is also supplied with plain ends.

Does it come with a quality certificate?

Yes, the mill test certificate (MTC) according to the lot standard is supplied upon request — ask for it in the quote if your project requires it.

Before using these data in engineering decisions — design, installation or systems with mechanical risk of pressure, rupture, fatigue, impact or water hammer — you must read the Technical notice and limitation of liability at the end of this page.
