The UNC Tall Nut is an industrial nut for joining studs, threaded rod, installation adjustments and metalworking fabrication. It is made from carbon steel and works with UNC thread; where applicable, the reference is related to UNC thread. Its main difference is a taller body than a common hex nut to increase engaged thread length. To buy without errors, the critical data is not only the diameter: the pitch, thread series and grade or material of the bolt, stud or threaded rod must also match. UNC is coarse thread and UNF is fine pitch. Height does not compensate for an incorrect thread.
Clean the thread, confirm diameter and pitch, start threading by hand and tighten with the proper tool according to the torque defined for the assembly.
Take the nominal diameter and pitch of the male thread. In inch threads, distinguish UNC from UNF; in metric, confirm the pitch indicated in millimeters.
It depends on the material and coating. Stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized finishes better resist exposure; zinc plated, black or black oxide finishes are recommended for protected environments.
