The Zinc Plated UNF Lock Nut is an industrial nut for automotive maintenance, mobile equipment, supports and machinery with fine thread. It is made from zinc plated carbon steel and works with UNF thread; where applicable, the reference is related to UNF thread. Its main difference is fine inch pitch with a nylon insert to reduce loosening in vibrating assemblies. UNF is fine pitch; UNC is coarse pitch. They must not be interchanged even if the diameter is the same.
Clean the thread, confirm diameter and pitch, start threading by hand and tighten with the proper tool according to the torque defined for the assembly.
Take the nominal diameter and pitch of the male thread. In inch threads, distinguish UNC from UNF; in metric, confirm the pitch indicated in millimeters.
It depends on the material and coating. Stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized finishes better resist exposure; zinc plated, black or black oxide finishes are recommended for protected environments.
