01Technical description

The safety switch (knife-blade disconnect) is a metal-enclosed switch with visible break, built to UL 98, in general duty (240 V) and heavy duty (600 V) versions with commercial ratings from 30 to 600 A. It serves as a lockable disconnecting means for equipment and motors per NTC 2050 article 430.

The knife-blade safety switch is switching equipment used to visibly disconnect circuits in panels, machines, internal service entrances and industrial distribution lines. Its main value compared with a molded case circuit breaker is visual inspection of the open state: the blades allow mechanical separation to be confirmed before working on the circuit, always within the electrical procedure defined by competent personnel. It can be quoted in a metal enclosure and, depending on the panel configuration, with fuse holders for backup protection. In industrial projects it is selected by system voltage, number of poles, rated current, load type, installation environment, required isolation capacity and compatibility with the existing protection scheme. TECTUL supplies it for maintenance, replacement and panel mounting where visible disconnection, operational lockout and a robust low-voltage switching solution are needed.

Selection guide

  • Define whether you need it only as a visible isolator or with built-in fuse holders.
  • Confirm voltage, phases, neutral and load type before choosing poles and configuration.
  • Validate available space in panel or wall, including door, handle and front access.
  • Select enclosure and protection rating according to dust, humidity, corrosion and location.
  • Coordinate switching with upstream and downstream circuit protections.

Mounting recommendations

  • Install on a rigid, accessible and signposted surface for safe operation.
  • Do not use it as automatic protection if the design requires overload or short-circuit tripping.
  • Verify terminal tightening, blade alignment and absence of heating during commissioning.
  • Integrate lockout, labeling and energization procedure according to the panel.
  • Installation must be performed by qualified personnel according to RETIE and NTC 2050.

We dispatch to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and all of Colombia. Request a quote via WhatsApp for your knife-blade switch with voltage, phases, required current, circuit use and whether you need an enclosure with fuses.

Safety switches are certified under UL 98 (enclosed and dead-front switches). The external handle accepts a LOTO padlock and the blade window allows visual verification that the circuit is open.

02Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a knife-blade safety switch?

We do not publish one price because it depends on current, voltage, number of poles, enclosure and whether fuse holders are required. TECTUL quotes it via WhatsApp according to the requested industrial line.

How is it different from a molded case circuit breaker?

The knife-blade switch is used mainly for visible isolation and switching. The molded case circuit breaker is an automatic protective breaker against overcurrent and short circuit.

Can it include fuse holders?

Yes, it can be quoted in configurations with or without fuse holders, according to the panel design and circuit protection required.

Is it suitable for three-phase industrial panels?

Yes, it is used in industrial panels when pole, voltage and current selection matches the system. These data must be confirmed for quoting.

How should it be installed?

It must be mounted in a suitable enclosure or surface, with front access, correctly tightened terminals, visible labeling and lockout procedure. Installation must be done by qualified personnel.

Does TECTUL dispatch knife-blade switches outside Bogotá?

Yes. TECTUL dispatches to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and other cities in Colombia through prior quotation via WhatsApp.

Fusible or non-fusible?

Fusible when the point also needs short-circuit protection (equipment back-up); non-fusible when only a disconnecting means is required and protection already exists upstream.

Why demand visible break?

Because it lets you see that the blades are physically open before working on the equipment — the verification step lockout-tagout procedures rely on.
