A molded-case circuit breaker (MCCB) used as a main is an automatic breaker per IEC 60947-2 or UL 489 protecting the panel feed against overload and short circuit. It is selected by rated current (15 A to 1,600 A in this line), ultimate breaking capacity Icu at service voltage, and number of poles.
The molded case circuit breaker, also known as an MCCB, is used as main or secondary protection in low-voltage industrial panels. Its function is to open the circuit under overcurrent and short-circuit conditions according to system coordination, so it must not be selected only by nominal amperage. Unlike a knife-blade safety switch, the molded case circuit breaker incorporates an automatic trip mechanism; and unlike a DIN rail circuit breaker, it is intended for feeders, main loads and panels with higher coordination requirements. To quote it, operating current, voltage, number of poles, required interrupting capacity, load type, mounting space, accessories, thermal or magnetic adjustment when applicable, and compatibility with panel busbars or cables are reviewed. TECTUL supplies it for construction, maintenance and replacement in industrial facilities that require reliable protection and technical selection.
We dispatch to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and all of Colombia. Request a quote via WhatsApp for your molded case circuit breaker with current, voltage, poles, required interrupting capacity and panel application.
| Parameter | Meaning |
|---|---|
| In | Rated uninterrupted current of the breaker |
| Icu | Ultimate breaking capacity in kA: maximum fault current it can safely interrupt |
| Ics | Service breaking capacity (% of Icu): the breaker remains operable after interrupting it |
| Ir | Thermal trip setting on adjustable frames |
| Commercial frames | 100 · 250 · 400 · 630 · 800 · 1600 A (manufacturer catalogs) |
Industrial MCCBs are certified under IEC 60947-2 (IEC markets) or UL 489 (North American markets). The declared Icu must exceed the short-circuit current calculated at the installation point.
It is quoted via WhatsApp because the value depends on current, number of poles, interrupting capacity, accessories, mounting type and industrial line availability.
The molded case circuit breaker is used in feeders and higher-demand main or secondary protection. The DIN rail breaker is used in branch circuits and modular panels.
In Colombian commercial usage it is often called an industrial breaker, but for quoting it is better to specify that an MCCB or molded case circuit breaker is required.
It must be defined with the short-circuit calculation at the installation point and panel coordination. Selection by visual estimate is not recommended.
It must be fixed in a suitable panel, with compatible conductors or busbars, correct terminal torque, circuit identification and review by qualified personnel.
TECTUL can quote accessories according to the available line, such as auxiliary contacts, trip coils, handles or interlocks, if the project requires them.
Higher than the available short-circuit current at the installation point, calculated from the transformer and service impedance; usual commercial values run from 25 to 85 kA per IEC 60947-2.
From about 100 A rated current, or when the available short circuit exceeds 10 kA: IEC 60898-1 miniature breakers top out at 63 A and 10 kA, while MCCBs cover up to 1,600 A with far higher breaking capacities.
