The DIN 471 external circlip is a retaining ring for shafts: it is installed in a machined groove on the outside diameter and forms a mechanical shoulder that limits axial movement of bearings, pulleys, bushings, sprockets or assemblies mounted on a shaft. The critical difference from the DIN 472 circlip is the application: DIN 471 works on an external shaft, while DIN 472 works inside a housing or bore. To select correctly, confirm the nominal shaft diameter, existing groove, space for the lugs and access for the installation pliers.

Installation recommendations

• Use external circlip pliers; avoiding screwdrivers reduces ring deformation and groove damage.
• Verify that the ring seats completely in the groove before axially loading the assembly.
• Do not reuse rings that are deformed, over-expanded or visibly lacking elasticity.
• Install with safety glasses: the ring can be projected during installation or removal.
• If the equipment works with vibration, periodically check groove wear and axial retention.
