01Technical description

The copperweld rod is a grounding electrode with a steel core clad in at least 254 µm of copper, per UL 467. RETIE requires rod electrodes of at least 2.4 m length, and NTC 2050 (section 250-84) accepts a maximum of 25 Ω per single electrode or requires additional electrodes.

TECTUL's Copperweld rod 5/8" x 2.4 m is an electrode for grounding/earthing systems in industrial, commercial and infrastructure electrical installations. Its function is to provide electrical contact with the soil within the arrangement defined by engineering, either as an individual electrode, part of a grid or complement to a grounding kit. It differs from conductive cement because the rod is the buried metallic element; conductive cement, when applicable, is an electrode-soil contact enhancer. It also differs from the complete kit because this page corresponds to the rod and its compatible connector, not to the assembly with cable, inspection box and enhancer. To quote correctly, indicate length, diameter, quantity, whether you require connector and whether the project needs additional 1.2 m, 1.5 m or 1.8 m rods, lengths mentioned in the lot.

Installation recommendations

  • Locate the rod according to the grounding/earthing design and the distances defined by the electrical responsible party.
  • Avoid striking or damaging the coating during installation; use proper driving tools.
  • Select the connector compatible with the rod diameter and conductor gauge.
  • Leave inspection access when the project requires a box or measuring point.
  • Verify continuity and final system measurement before closing excavations.

Electrode dimensions and requirements (UL 467 / RETIE)

ParameterValue
Commercial diameters12.7 mm (1/2") and 15.9 mm (5/8")
Commercial lengths1.2 · 1.5 · 1.8 · 2.4 m (RETIE requires at least 2.4 m as the installation electrode)
Copper claddingMinimum 254 µm (0.254 mm) per UL 467
Target resistance≤25 Ω per single electrode (NTC 2050, 250-84)

The steel core provides the mechanical strength to drive the rod and the copper layer provides conductivity and corrosion resistance. If one electrode exceeds 25 Ω, NTC 2050 requires adding electrodes spaced at least 1.8 m apart.

02Frequently asked questions

What is the price of the Copperweld rod 5/8 x 2.4 m?

The price depends on quantity, availability, requested length and whether it is quoted with connector. TECTUL confirms the updated value via WhatsApp.

How does it differ from the complete grounding kit?

The rod is only the electrode. The complete kit may include rod, connector, bare copper cable, conductive cement and inspection box according to the design.

How is the Copperweld rod installed?

It is driven or installed at the point defined by the design, protecting the coating and connecting the conductor with a compatible connector or joint specified by engineering.

What sizes does this lot handle?

The main data is 5/8" x 2.4 m. The lot also mentions 1.2 m, 1.5 m and 1.8 m lengths for quotation according to availability.

Does it include a connector?

The lot description mentions a compatible copper connector, but inclusion must be confirmed when quoting because it may be sold as rod only or with accessory.

Does TECTUL dispatch to other cities?

Yes. TECTUL dispatches to Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and other Colombian cities according to availability and transport conditions.

What resistance should the grounding system reach?

At most 25 Ω per single electrode per NTC 2050 section 250-84; substation and lightning-protection designs target lower values (10 Ω or less) per the project analysis.

Why copperweld rather than solid copper rod?

Because the steel core withstands driving without bending and the 254 µm copper layer provides the conductivity and corrosion resistance; a solid copper rod of the same diameter costs more and is mechanically weaker.
